The solar energy diagram below shows how the flow of energy from the sun can generate power in either DC (Direct Current) or AC (Alternating Current).
Solar energy can be used in a number of ways: to heat water, to power photovoltaic cells (as pictured), concentrating heat to create power from liquids, or passive building heating.

1. solar energy comes from the sun in the form of photons.
2. the solar photons are converted to electrical power within the photovoltaic solar panels.
3. the panels transfer the electrical energy via a charge controller.
4. the power can then be used from a battery system for remote or off-grid purposes OR an inverter converts the power to AC to be used within the home or fed back into the electrical grid system.

How much Solar Energy is there available on earth?
The planet earth receives around 89 petawatts of useable sunlight and currently humans only make use of a tiny fraction of that energy. Even if all earths power was converted to solar we would only use around 0.015 petawatts (less than 0.02%). Every year the cost of solar panels decreases as technology finds better and more efficient methods of converting sunlight into electricity.
