What Type of Vegetarian are You?

Delicious vegetarian cuisine ingredients!

“What is a Vegetarian?”According to Wikipedia – “Vegetarianism is the practice of following a plant-based diet including fruits, vegetables, cereal grains, nuts, and seeds, with or without dairy products and eggs. A vegetarian does not eat meat, game, poultry, fish, crustacea, shellfish, or products of animal slaughter such as animal-derived gelatin and rennet”.

“These people don’t follow Wikipedia!”Many people think of Vegetarians as one large group that just doesn’t eat meat. But nothing could be further from the truth. There are several different categories & sub-categories of vegetarians as diverse as the reasons for going Vegetarian in the first place. Despite the fact that a vegetarian is generally defined as someone who doesn’t eat meat or fish, it is still possible that someone who is vegetarian could conceivably eat dairy products such as milk, eggs and cheese. A “lacto ovo vegetarian” doesn’t eat meat, fish or poultry, but does consume eggs, milk or cheese. A “lacto vegetarian” consumes milk and cheese products, but doesn’t consume eggs. A “Vegan” is someone who doesn’t consume any animal product or by-product, including dairy food. They eat only vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains and legumes. They also don’t use animal products, such as leather. Vegans also don’t use white sugar because it’s often processed with a substance derived from animal bones that whitens the sugar. ]]> There are other categories within the vegetarian community, “fruitarians” for example, eat only fruit. Their rationale is that fruits, including fruits such as tomatoes, are self-perpetuating and don’t need to be planted to create the food source. They consider it a way of eating that’s most in balance and harmony with the earth, the most natural. All of the above will eat cooked vegetables, fruits and legumes. There is also a growing movement towards “raw foods veganism” which is the practice of eating only raw or living foods. This is based on the assumption that cooking food processes most of the nutrients out of it, and to get all the nutritional value, vitamins and amino acids from food, it’s best consumed raw, or juiced. If cooked at all, it should only be cooked to slightly over 100 degrees, so the nutrients are still retained. Authors Footnote: The more restrictive you become with your diet, however, the more educated you need to become to ensure your body is getting all the necessary Nutrition ,proteins and vitamins that you need to maintain good health, especially muscle and heart health.

What is Energy Efficiency?

What is energy efficiency? Reducing energy demand requirements without reducing the end benefits. As an example it is possible to reduce your home lighting energy use by 95%! but still receive the same light output using LED’s.

But energy efficiency also can include passive energy efficiency, so when you insulate your home well you can heat your home to the same standard or comfort level but use substantially less energy.

To stop or at least slow down climate change one of the main changes we can all make is to always think of energy efficiency. So for example when we purchase a new car, demand better efficiency every time, this forces car makers to concentrate their efforts on building the most fuel efficient cars.

If we think of energy efficiency in all aspects of our lives, not only will we save money in fuel bills but the air will be cleaner to breathe. High efficiency gas water heaters use less fossil fuel, therefore creating less pollution but still providing the same amount of heat output.

Remember also that when we build a new home we are most likely creating a building that is going to be used for 50+ years, so why not make it the very best efficiency we can. By insulating our homes well, using good quality appliances that will last a long time, this will ensure we create great energy efficient homes that will last for generations.

Using Solar Energy to Heat Our Homes

by Don Pacharelli (Naples, Florida, USA)

Using the Energy of the Sun!

Using the Energy of the Sun!

There is no reason why we cannot use Solar Energy to heat our homes. With the price of oil being at a record high, many people around the globe are beginning to suffer due to the high cost of heating their homes. Sadly, those who suffer the most are typically the elderly and the poor who cannot afford the high cost of heat. In addition to costing people a lot of money to say the least, the oil dependence that America has on other nations is costing us problems around the globe. It is time we started looking for alternative means to heat our homes and fuel our cars so that we can be a self sufficient nation.

Solar Energy used to entail having large panels on the home that looked like they were something from outer space. This is not the case any longer. Today’s solar energy panels look attractive and are used on all the best buildings. It is about time that we started converting to solar energy. The cost of heat will be reaching a record high this winter as oil prices are through the roof. They are already having an impact on people who are finding that the cost of their heating bills are starting to rise because of the computer adjustment. Those who are on budget planning are finding their bills already being adjusted in anticipation of the winter months. It is obvious that we need to stop having a dependency on foreign oil and begin using solar energy to heat our homes. In addition to being costly, it has a negative impact on the environment. By using solar energy to heat our homes, we can be saving the earth as well as saving money for ourselves!.Using Solar Energy has Advantages & Disadvantages the main advantages being low cost electricity & positive effects for the environment, the main disadvantage being the initial cost!.It is the most logical choice for the future. It is about time that we start using solar energy to heat our homes in addition to being an energy booster for electrical appliances.

Tips On Making Compost The Easy Way

by Richard Adams (EcoLivingAdvice.com)

Compost is great stuff to have around, particularly if you’re a serious gardener. Adding compost to your soil is sure to make your plants grow bigger and healthier, as it provides them with additional nutrients that they would otherwise not be able to get from the soil. While you can buy commercially-produced compost, a more eco friendly alternative that could save you some money and help reduce the amount of garbage you throw away is to create your own compost using kitchen waste. And it can be a relatively simple process, depending on how involved you would like to be and how soon you want your compost. Here are some tips on making compost the easy way.If you have a big backyard, you can start composting simply by creating a compost pile by enclosing a certain area using chicken wire or other fencing material. The pile should be made of layers of kitchen waste such as vegetables and fruit peelings and eggshells and green waste from your garden such as grass clippings and leaves. Putting a layer of kitchen waste, followed by one of green waste, etc., helps ensure that the compost pile reaches the correct temperature and decomposes efficiently. But you should avoid putting in scrap meat into your compost pile as it creates a bad odor while it decomposes. You will also have to turn your compost pile occasionally to ensure that it decomposes efficiently, and add a little water to keep it moist. If you don’t have enough space in your yard you can do your composting in a compost bin. You can buy these commercially or you can use existing containers such as a garbage can. What’s important is that the container encloses the compost so that pests can’t get at it and it has a lid so you can close it and contain the smells that can come from heavy compost piles. If you live in an apartment or other urban residence where space is at a premium, then you can compost using a compost tumbler. These containers are essentially compost bins that allow you to turn them using a crank on the outside, making this chore easy while ensuring that your compost is properly mixed.

Three is the Magic Number – The 3 R’s

by Lena Santos (Philippines.)

Reduce, Reuse & Recycle!!

Reduce, Reuse & Recycle!!

With all the natural disasters that have been happening in recent times, many scientists believe these are all due to global warming!.Hurricanes, typhoons and Tsunami’s are said to be a symptoms of this phenomenon. Due to the massive effects these disasters have on the lives of ordinary people, many global leaders are being called to action. As an individual, though, how are we able to help?. Never has being an environmentalist as cool as it is today.

There is the traditional Recycling of waste and using biodegradable materials, but there is so much more that we can do.We hear about Green Living or sustainable living, but what do these phrases actually mean?. Sustainable living is a lifestyle choice. Those who observe it try their best to live their lives with the least possible impact on the Earth’s natural resources. This is borne out of respect for the environment and to keep the humans’ symbiotic relationship with the planet’s cycles and ecologies. Sustainable living practitioners believe that by altering their methods of diet, energy consumption and transportation, that they can reduce their carbon footprint on the environment.Waste management is one of the most important aspects of green living. Segregating biodegradable waste from non-biodegradables is only the first step. Many items of non-biodegradable waste can still be recycled like Glass Bottles and Aluminium Cans. Even old Newspapers can be recycled and turned into brown paper bags. There are also proper ways to dispose of plastic ,electronic items such as Computers & Cell Phones, as well as Old Batteries. When it comes to food, leading a sustainable lifestyle means not needing to buy all your food requirements at the supermarket. Why not start to grow your own herbs and vegetables in your own back garden?. This way, you definitely know that the food you are eating is organic and is not subject to industrial chemicals like pesticide, fungicides & herbicides, besides which its also cheaper & more fun!. ]]> If you still need to go on a supermarket run, however, make sure you bring your own Reusable Plastic Grocery Bags. This is so you will not need the plastic bags from the supermarket, which contribute a considerable amount to the world’s landfill problems!.We can also help the environment by becoming educated on how to use energy both responsibly & properly. In an ideal world we should only use energy which is renewable, such as Solar Energy .As this may not be financially or regionally possible for many people at the moment, just being conscious of the amount of energy we use may be enough for the meantime. During winter, for example, we should be more conscious of the energy we use for heating. Seal up all the areas where drafts would possibly seep through, like back doors and garage doors. We should also draw heavy curtains or blinds over the windows at night to keep the warm air inside. As cold air sinks, the loft insulation should also be regularly checked just before winter comes. Our modes of transportation are one of the biggest culprits of air pollution as they use fossil fuels to operate. To make as little impact on the environment as possible, Hybrid Cars or all electric cars are advisable. Failing this walking, cycling, & car pooling should also be something that we should ALL do more often!.No single person or country is solely responsible for the environmental problems the world now faces, but we can all make our own contribution to ensure that the impact we have on this world & the carbon footprint we all own is as small as is possible.

The Biggest Dehumidifier is the Greenest Dehumidifier?

by Tom Warren (Preston, UK)

If you have tried everything else to solve a moisture problem in your home you may consider buying a dehumidifier. You are a responsible person and you want to take care of the environment. Which type of dehumidifier is kindest to the planet?Dehumidifiers come in different sizes; portable home dehumidifiers in the USA, for example, range from 25 to 74 US pints (12L-35L) per day and commercial quality units from around 50 to 150 pints (24L-70L).Smaller dehumidifiers use less energy don’t they??Yes.So, a smaller dehumidifier causes less damage to the environment, right??No, its not quite that simple.Larger dehumidifiers are more energy efficient than smaller models. The best way to explain this is using the Energy Factor (EF) concept applied by the US Energy Star Program when certifying dehumidifiers as “energy efficient”. The EF is a measure of the volume of water (litres) removed by a dehumidifier for every energy unit (kilowatt hour) consumed.Because smaller dehumidifiers are always less efficient than larger ones the EF they must achieve for certification is lower. A 25 pint unit, for example must have an EF of at least 1.2 L/kwh whereas a 70 pint dehumidifier must achieve at least 1.8. Thus a 70 pint dehumidifier removes 50% more water per energy dollar

spent than a 25 pint unit.A dehumidifier is controlled by a humidistat; like a thermostat but for maintaining a pre-set level of humidity rather than temperature. The humidistat ensures that the dehumidifier only runs when the moisture content of the air is higher than the programmed level. The 70 pint dehumidifier uses more energy while its running but runs for a much shorter time to reduce humidity, using less energy overall. Therefore the carbon emissions caused by generating the energy used to run the larger dehumidifier are less than those caused by the smaller unit. This is good for the environment and good for your pocket as energy costs over the life time of a dehumidifier are far greater than its initial purchase price. What is more, because a 70 pint dehumidifier runs for fewer hours per day than a 25 pint unit it will last longer. That means you need fewer replacements over your life time, reducing the environmental damage caused by manufacturing dehumidifiers and saving even more of your money. So, although it seems to deny common sense, the greenest dehumidifier is the biggest dehumidifier. It’s also the best dehumidifier if you want to save money, which can’t be bad for anyone.

The Benefits Of Commercial Solar Panels For Business

by Jeffrey Nevil (Brighton)

Are you enthusiastic about helping the environment and saving money at the same time? You can now make use of cleaner and environmentally friendly energy, with the help of commercial solar panels. In recent years these have become increasingly available through the help of government support, as politicians understand that there are many benefits of encouraging their use. Here are just some of the benefits of using commercial solar panels.

Cut down on the cost utility bills by making use of the energy that comes from commerical solar panels, you can reduce the cost of your utility bills. With energy costs soaring, having your own source of electricity will help you avoid some of the charges associated with running industrial equipment. Receiving funding and subsidies from Government Government agencies at both the local and national level are providing incentives to encourage the use of solar panels, which has made using them a much more appealing option for both businesses and consumers.

Through these schemes government agencies have helped increase the amount of energy that is generated from renewable resources and at the same time reduced our reliance on other forms of energy that are harmful to the environment such as fossil fuels. In an effort to increase the amount of energy generated renewable sources, the government in the UK introduced Enhanced Capital Allowances to encourage businesses to invest in renewable energy technologies. This scheme enables businesses to get tax relief on purchasing and installing solar panel on their business premises. This has been a source of welcome relief for many businesses in the current economic climate.

Low maintenance costsCommercial solar panels are easy to maintain and cost of upkeep is generally very low. The solar cells within the panels can repaired or renovated quite easily with very little cost attached. The solar batteries, which can be incorporated into the panel itself, normally last for up to 7 to 8 years, although this varies between the different manufactures. However, these do not need to be replaced very often and hence the cost of maintenance is very low.

They are also relatively cheap to replace and some barratries remain under warranty for up to 3 years, which means that having them repaired and maintained, may cost you nothing at all. Environmentally friendly with low noise levels The energy that comes from solar panels is a lot cleaner than other sources of energy and of course its renewable. Unlike the operation of wind turbines, solar panels do not produce any noise what so ever.

This means that there will be very few objections to placing solar panels on your premises, unlike wind turbines, where the government has struggled to get these approved at a local level, because of concerns about the levels of noise. Commercial panels are available in many different sizes dependent on what your energy requirements are. They are a great way of saving money and the environment at the same time.

Sustaining our Waterways

by Steve Maloney (Chicag, Illinois, USA)

We are ALL responsible for helping avoid this!

We are ALL responsible for helping avoid this!

Salt and fresh waterways are not being taken care of today. The problem is, since they are being assaulted, the water in them is no longer fit for drinking and bathing and they are even losing the ability to support life within the water. Most bodies of water on the earth now include things like toxins, fertilizers, prescription drugs, and even sewage.Although a lot of the responsibility for the destruction of waterways is definitely on large businesses and various governments, every individual can do something to keep our waterways preserved. You can do something to help take care of the waterways that we have on earth. Water is at the very heart of sustainable life on this planet of ours, please do your bit to help improve the situation for everyone!.Here are a few great tips that you can easily do to help out and make a difference. Green Living is not difficult, its just about acting sensibly & responsibly:

Tip #1 – Dealing with Storm Water:One reason that streams have become so degraded is because of storm water runoff that is not managed. Often the water ends up on peoples driveways and roads, then it picks up chemicals and various other pollutants and goes into the streams. With all the runoff, banks can become unstable, the habitat may be lost, and the streams eventually erode. What can you do? You can try capturing storm water with rain barrels or rain gardens. Another option is to plant plants that will absorb a lot of the water so there is not a lot of runoff when it does rain.

Tip #2 – Stop Using So Much Fertilizer!:Another thing that you can do is to stop using so much fertilizer. Most people end up using too much and this fertilizer ends up going into the waterways. This can make algae grow quickly, and when algae dies, it takes away oxygen and makes the area one where other organisms are not able to live. If you are going to use fertilizer, do so when it is cold. You can purchase a kit to test the soil as well to see if you really need to do any fertilizing at all.

Tip #3 – Clean up the Waste from Your Pet:You may not realize it, but Pet Waste that is left eventually can wash into the streams in your area. This increases levels of certain bacteria, which is dangerous for the waterways. Consider putting the waste from your pet in the toilet or in a trash can. Another option is to have a a href=”http://www.easy-green-living.org/green-ebooks-no109.html”>Worm Farm that will take care of your pet’s waste.

Tip #4 – Get Rid of Oil, Waste & Chemicals – the Right Way:Just a small amount of oil is able to contaminate a couple million gallons of our water. Trash and other types of chemicals can end up causing contamination, clogging, and more. Make sure you never flush things down the storm water drains. If you have toxic chemicals, take them to the appropriate place. Before you flush a pool, you need to make sure you eliminate those chemicals.

Tip #5 – Remember Your Vehicle:Last of all, remember your vehicle. If you wash your car at your home, often the water with the soap goes right into a waterway. The chemicals can end up causing problems, like poisoning life forms in the waterway. If you are leaking fluids, such as oil, you can also pollute the waterways. If you are going to wash your car at home, do it in the grass, but a better idea is to go to a commercial carwash. Keep your car serviced as well to avoid any leaks that can be dangerous to waterways.

Solar Powered Garden Fountains

Solar Powered Garden Fountains:

Have you thought about having a garden fountain before but been put off by running wires to your household power supply, especially if the distance to where you would like to place your fountain is considerable.

There are an amazing number of solar powered garden fountains available now, that require no wiring, and run total off sunlight alone.

Birds will love drinking and playing in these beautiful water features that require no ongoing power to run.

There is two options available:

1. Buy a ready to go solar power water fountain, these start for as little as $50 upto hundreds of dollars for larger units.

2. Buy a solar pump kit and install your own fountain in a home built pond, stream or fountain. This can be a great way to go if you have time to spend designing and putting together the garden water feature. If you are building a bigger pond or stream system then it’s definately worth spending a bit more on a good quality pump, that will last for years and years. As a side note the pump I’m using for my home water tank is a Grundfos and we have used this for 10 years for all our inside and outside water needs, including 4 people showering everyday (well almost every day!).

solar powered garden fountain

Everyday garden fountains are powered by electricity. Most electric power plants are powered by burning coal. Coal is the remains of animals and plants that lived millions of years ago. Plants absorb energy from the sun, and when we burn coal, we are harnessing this stored power. Solar power is able to eliminate the middle man so to speak, and use the power of the sun that is coming to us right now.

Check this funky video out about Solar and Fountains, its short and sweet!.

How Do Solar Powered Garden Fountains Work ?

How it works is very simple. The garden fountain is attached to a control panel that contains solar cells, and a battery (optional). During the day, the solar cells receive energy from the sun, and that energy is used to charge the battery which runs the pump both during the day or after dark. If you don’t require the pump to run during the evening then you can do without the battery pack.

Some of you might be wondering, “what if it’s an overcast day?” It’s really not much of a problem. Even on overcast days, we still receive energy from the sun. (If we didn’t, it would be pitch black outside on overcast days.) On cloudy days, the fountain will still receive the sun’s energy to power the fountain for 4 to 6 hours, but the flow will be less unless it’s a particularly sunny day. If you live in a area that freezes during winter then it is probably better to disconnect the pump at that time of year, otherwise you may damage your pump.

You might be thinking “but I can’t afford solar technology!” Don’t fret solar powered garden fountains cost from as little as 50 dollars, so they aren’t going to break the bank!

Some benefits of Solar Garden Fountains?

– Very easy to install, no cables to run

– Will attract birds to your garden (unless you have a cat!)

– Run on free solar energy

– Provide a soothing sound when relaxing in your garden

– Doesn’t require an electrician to install, you can DIY
